This Weekend in the Concert Vault

It's time once again for the newsletter that cleans the Concert Vault's closet of musically amorphous, inconspicuous, and overlooked concerts that have been waiting to see the light of day.

Our Buried Treasure this week is the Latin leaning, Bach-inspired Procol Harum, getting their rocks off with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 1973, playing everything but their classic hit, "A Whiter Shade Of Pale." Oh well, it's still very cool for a band with an organ.

You won't believe what we've found in the Vault's depths this week. With a predisposition for an awkward haircut, a plaid suit and a voice to make everyone cringe, yup; Tiny Tim at the Fillmore is gonna make you feel all flowery.

Monday we look to our Midwest compatriots at Daytrotter, who are building a John Peel-like ubiquity for today's bands. There are some gems in this week's group, so do yourself a favor and start with The Botticellis, move on to The Teeth and top it off with some Delta Spirit.

This Weekend in the Concert Vault

It's that time again. This weekend we get thematic with a focus on New York-area bands.

Who better to lead off than the big, bad Boss himself, BRUUUUUUCE! This is one of the concerts that makes us here at the Vault get wobbly in the knees, as Bruce was still relatively unknown at the time of this Berkeley show. Attention all of you Asbury Park-Jersey shore beach bums - this concert puts the hot in Nathan's dogs.

For another band who takes tri-state, east coast-aggressive-stereotype-posturing to a new level, but with minimal memorable value, check out the Good Rats at the Bottom Line in 1978.

And to complete the trifecta, on Monday turn up the 'loudest band in New York', as A Place to Bury Strangers shreds eardrums in San Francisco at last February's Noise Pop festival.

Yes, we like the current stuff just as much as the old stuff.

This Weekend in the Concert Vault

H-e-l-l-o newsletter reading people. One of the most lauded concerts in the Vault gets its due as the Buried Treasure this week. That's right, it's the LSD-pastoral-hog loving, quintessentially British band Pink Floyd's seizure inducing set from the Fillmore in 1971.

Who fans, go listen to Roger Daltrey chat about his 1985 solo tour. We've posted pre-show interviews recorded before his Philadelphia (just posted Wednesday) and Boston shows. We hope you enjoy our favorite game of connecting the musical dots as much as we do.

If you're not familiar with Death Cab for Cutie yet, then you should be. We're adding their exclusive pre-album-release Daytrotter session from April. Educate yourself and listen to it, then go buy the album.

This weekend's Buried Treasure features Big Country, laying a proper Scottish siege on the city of Philadelphia in 1986. The boys from Dunfermline take no prisoners on this night.

We've properly balanced the remaining portions of your weekend new releases diet. Late shows / second sets from the Dead, Santana and Jean-Luc Ponty are here, and for dessert we present a short set from the Boomtown Rats.

This Weekend in the Concert Vault

Most of you know that the foundation of our massive, butt-kickingly awesome collection of concerts is the archive of San Francisco Bay Area legend Bill Graham. This weekend, for no other reason than because we can, we feel like offering up a San Francisco theme.

As certain as a summer in San Francisco is more like a winter, Sly & the Family Stone bring it with a guaranteed energy and funk tightness as today’s Buried Treasure.

We wish It's a Beautiful Day actually meant sunshine in the City, but don't let that stop you from hearing the band corral their disparate influences at the Fillmore Auditorium in 1968. This concert tips its hat to the cultural and historical relevance of 1960s San Francisco.

A pop culture figure on a return to in-vogue status, a good-ole-SF boy capable of balancing his love for golf, drugs and Hollywood cameos equally, yes... you've been waiting for it, go Back to the Future as Huey Lewis waxes rhapsodic on success in a 1984 interview.

Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends, fads and popular opinion. Whoever said that was a freaking genius! The point is that the music scene in the Bay Area is still happening, exemplified by the unique sound of The Dodos. Go listen for yourself . . .
