i think judge meant it was 7 or 8 years ago
that he and mary first made contact on the emi board
but i was thinking the emi board was more like 5 and a half years ago
but i could be wrong about that
i joined the official pf board five years ago this month
and the emi board might have been going on for quite a long time before that

maybe you can find a place to stake a claim

here, in america
anybody can stake a claim on federal land
if nobody already has

you can stake a claim on anything
gold
jewels
pine cones
holly bushes
pine tree bark
anything worth money

Hey don't forget me!! ..umm, who am I again..?

Seriously, I've been going through a difficult and depressing time and as a result
my abilities as a correspondent amongst other interests has been affected.

My dad passed over a year ago and he was a very strict and old-fashioned person
and now I have older siblings to contend with who are being oportunists taking
greedy advantages, and in certain regards being rather unkind toward me..
who?

well
there are two kinds of public land:
national forest
or land administered by the bureau of land management (BLM)

blm land you can homestead
or you can mine it
but you can't put a mining claim on it
in other words
if you find gold in a creek on BLM land
then you can use a gold pan or sluice box or dredge to mine the gold
but you can't stop anyone else from doing the same thing right next to you

if you find gold in a creek on national forest
then you can go down to the county seat and file a 25 acre claim on it
and then no-one can mine there except you or anyone that you say can help you

you have to pay a few dollars a year fee for each claim
and you have to demonstrate that you are actually mining the claim
or someone may be able to take it away from you

you can have as many claims as you want
as long as you pay the small fee each year for each
and prove you are actually working the claim

if you file a mineral claim
you have the rights to any mineral on that land
CLEAR DOWN TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

IF YOU WANTED, YOU COULD THEN SELL THE MINERAL CLAIM TO SOMEONE FOR A BILLION DOLLARS
(IF YOU COULD FIND SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO PAY THAT MUCH FOR IT)
SOME PEOPLE JUST GO PROSPECTING AROUND--AND THEN FILE CLAIMS--AND THEN SELL THEM
WITHOUT EVER DOING ANY ACTUAL MINING

IF YOU HAVE A MINERAL CLAIM YOU ALSO HAVE THE TIMBER RIGHTS

INCIDENTAL TO MINING
IN OTHER WORDS
YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO CHOP DOWN THE TREES TO SELL THE TIMBER
BUT YOU COULD CUT DOWN TREES TO MAKE A CABIN OR TOOL SHED
OR SYSTEM OF SLUICES
OR IF YOU THOUGHT THERE WAS GOLD UNDER SOME TREES
THEN YOU COULD CUT DOWN THOSE TREES TO GET THAT GOLD

YOU CAN LIVE ON THE CLAIM IN AN RV OR TRAILER OR MOBILE HOME
OR YOU CAN BUILD A CABIN
BUT THE CABIN CAN'T HAVE A FOUNDATION OR PERMANENT ROOF
IT HAS TO HAVE A TENT TYPE ROOF
BECAUSE WHEN YOU QUIT MINING
AND MOVE AWAY
THEY WANT THE LAND TO REVERT BACK TO NATURE

if you have a claim, the land is still national forest
so you can't prohibit hikers from passing through
and anyone can camp for up to ten days at a time
anywhere on national forest
so, if someone wanted to hike in and camp on yer claim
you couldn't kick them out till ten days had passed
and then they could just move 100 yards away and camp there another ten days

also...
anyone can do "recreational mining" anywhere on national forest
but mining is work
not recreation Laughing
so, don't worry
if some hiker came down to yer creek and stuck a gold pan in the water
you couldn't tell him he couldn't do that
but you don't have to worry
because he isn't allowed to use a motorized dredge on yer claim
and that's the only way he'd be taking much damn gold out of that creek Laughing
panning is just a prospecting tool
it takes about 20 minutes to render down a pan of dirt
and you have to crouch at the water's edge
and it's back breaking
if yer not used to it

then
if you see a few grains of gold
that might mean there's a lot of gold at the bottom of the creek
but it takes a dredge to go get that

that's how you do it in america
i'm sure there's probably some similar system in south africa
that trillion dollar gold mine you were talking about
was once discovered by some guy just poking around
and he found some gold somewhere
and he went and filed a claim on it

call yer federal government and ask them about info on filing a mineral claim
and go prospecting
it's fun Smile

and you might get rich!

ALSO
REMEMBER
THE TYPE OF MINE I HAVE DESCRIBED IS A PLACER MINE
NOT A HARD ROCK MINE

A PLACER MINE IS IN A RIVER OR CREEK

you can always file a hard rock claim somewhere
if you want
but

I ONLY DO PLACER MINING
BECAUSE I DON'T WANNA BE CRAWLING IN SOME (god damned cold wet dark) Laughing Cool TUNNEL UNDER GROUND

IF I EVER FOUND A VEIN OF GOLD
OR SOME DIAMONDS OR JADE OR WHATEVER
IN SOME ROCK OUT-CROPPING SOMEWHERE
I'D JUST FILE A CLAIM ON IT
AND SELL THE CLAIM

also
with a placer mine
you can't mine all year
just certain months
mostly in summer
because if you mine while the fish eggs are in the sand
(IN THE SPRING)
you will kill the baby fish
but if you mine in the summer
it churns up the bottom of the creek
and that stirs up nutrients for the fish
and creates better places for them to lay their eggs

a fish can't lay her eggs on a creek bottom that is impacted for thousands of years like cement
so few eggs live
they get washed away or eaten by other creatures
but after you dredge it up
a fish now has all kindza loose sand and gravel to lay her eggs in

when a placer miner come through and churns up a creek bottom in the summer
the next year there is always a bumper crop of fish

(fish will congregate behind yer sluice, too
to get the nutrients and bugs and worms that you churn up
and you can catch the fish
and otters will come and hang out to catch the fish
and they are under-water acrobats
and are very intelligent and playful;
they are my favorite animals
fun to have around Smile )

forest rangers who know this
(that placer miners are very good for the fish population)
actually like placer miners
Evil or Very Mad as long as they only churn up the bottom Evil or Very Mad
a placer miner isn't allowed to mine in the river banks
because that changes the course of the stream
and the fine, muddy clay type dirt then covers up fish eggs
and smothers them

loose, clean gravel protects the eggs and lets them breathe
but slimy, fine clay-type dirt kills them

there is little or no actual soluble dirt or clay in the bottom of a stream
only in the banks
so stirring up the bottom gravel is good for the fish
but tearing out the dirt, in the banks of the stream, is bad for the fish
so never do it
the rangers will see color in the water
and follow it upstream
and find out yer doing it
EVERY TIME
that's one of the main things they check for
all day

follow the laws and the rangers will love you
they will come and check on you
and scare off claim jumpers
and warn you when there are rogue man-eating grizzly bears in the area
(which there WILL be)
and keep out the hells angels etc
with their pot crops and meth labs
and bring you stuff

my advice:
make friends with the forest rangers
they are the cops in the forest Wink
they carry guns
and they can arrest people

in america
you can carry a gun in the forest, too
and i suggest you do
